The Daily Spam Report 11/11: “For Your Eyes Only”

For-your-Eyes-OnlyThis is neither the time nor the place to argue about who is the best James Bond in cinematic history. It seems to be a generational thing with those 50 and above always choosing Sean Connery, the contemporary generation picking Daniel Craig and people of my generation (in our mid-40’s) seeing Pierce Brosnan more as Remington Steele than 007.

But the Bond I mostly grew up watching was Roger Moore. I found him capable if a little too upper-crust for the part, but one of his better runs was in, “For Your Eyes Only.” I specifically remember the ending as it became a line my parents would use to solve possession issues among my sisters and me.

The scene has a Russian general trying to get access to some kind of weapon that’s really bad (Cold War politics) and Bond destroys it as the Russian guy is watching. “Detente,” Bond says. “You don’t have it and I don’t have it.”

You can see how unfulfilling that answer would be to a kid fighting with his siblings, but it stuck with me.

So, you can understand why I was intrigued by the subject header of the email posted below. Now, I’ve never met Jacques Aucoin or Jacques Aucion (he spelled his name differently in the short message) which always makes me leery. In fact, shouldn’t he live up to the standards of James Bond and in a three-line email actually spell everything correctly?

The moral of today’s Spam Report is simple: If an unknown French guy who doesn’t know how to spell his own name writes you out of the blue to try to start a business relationship that will inevitably lead to him asking for your personal information, fight off your love of James Bond movie titles and just hit delete.

Hope you had a nice weekend.

Cheers (fitting since we were writing about the British above),
