The Daily Spam Report 10/30: “Answer back”

DallasCastWhen I was growing up, date night for my parents was Friday night. When my grandparents would watch my sisters and me, we knew our date night was in front on the television for the prime-time extravaganza that was “Dallas.”

J.R., Bobby, Sue Ellen, Miss Ellie, we were entranced by their struggles, power plays, foibles and overall dramatic lives. For a short period of time, I was convinced I wanted to go into the oil business.

It’s why when I was working in Denver a couple elections back and I got the chance to interview a real-life J.R. Ewing in T. Boone Pickens, you can see how happy I look (

In all honesty, I don’t know of many other interviews I’ve been more excited to conduct in my 20-plus year career. Fascinating guy talking about a fascinating topic.

Even with all of what I’ve just described, I am still not going to fall for the email I received last night. I don’t know Lee Hyuk. Never heard of him. And I can’t envision a complete stranger is going to offer me an opportunity to invest in a crude oil project through an email. Now, if that person were J.R. Ewing, maybe we’d be having a different conversation, but for now, please don’t fall for this.

He’s trying to build a relationship, phishing for information that inevitably would lead to a request from me for private, personal information like a bank account or Social Security number.

The moral of today’s Spam Report is that people like J.R. Ewing and T. Boone Pickens don’t find people like me on line to offer us investment opportunities. Just doesn’t happen.

Take care,
